Setup Instructions

These instructions provide the steps required to start using a Portal Light. Once you've completed these steps, the Portal Light can scan for Bluetooth devices and send data to and download data from Kio Cloud over its connection to your facility's WiFi network.

What's required before you begin

  • You've created a Kio Cloud account and added the devices with your Order ID. If you need to do this, please see the Getting Started section.
  • A WiFi access point with administrator permissions or a mobile WiFi Hotspot (required for default network setup)
  • Network settings of the WiFi network the Portal Light will connect to at its install location (required for custom network setup)
  • Kio Gateway Installer app installed on your mobile device. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store.

Step 1: Set up Default Network

When you power on a Portal Light for the first time, it automatically searches for the default network stored in its internal memory. You will set up this default network on your access point or mobile Hotspot.

Set up of the default network is critical step. It allows the Portal Light to connect to Kio Cloud and download its local WiFi network settings (custom network). How to configure the custom network is provided in a later step. The default network also serves as a backup network - when a Portal Light fails to connect to its configured custom network, it attempts to connect to the default network (whenever this network is available).

Add the below default network to your WiFi access point or mobile Hotspot:

  • SSID: kontaktDeployment
  • Password: LTPGjjwp256
  • Network security: WPA, WPA2-PSK, WEP
  • WiFi Frequency: 2.4 GHz

Step 2: Power on Portal Light

Plug the Portal Light into a power outlet and watch the following LED sequence on the device:

  • RED LED (up to 5 seconds): device is starting up
  • BLUE LED blinking (up to a few minutes): firmware upgrade in progress. Do not unplug the Portal Beam during a firmware update; this may cause the device to become inoperable.
  • YELLOW LED blinking (up to 1 minute): connected to default network and waiting for time synchronization
  • GREEN LED solid: connected to the network, scanning Bluetooth devices and sending data to Kio Cloud

When in a Green status, proceed to the next setup step.

If its LED status indicator remains RED, this indicates it could not connect to the default network. Please verify the default network settings are correct and it's set to 2.4 GHz.

Step 3: Configure for use with Kio Cloud

During this step, the Portal Light connects to and synchronizes with Kio Cloud.

From your mobile device, open the Kio Gateway Installer app and sign in with your Kio Cloud account credentials.

From the bottom of the screen, tap Install devices > tap Portal Light Setup > bring your mobile device close to the Portal Light.

When the app detects the Portal Light, the app guides you through the configuration steps.

Having a problem with the app not finding a device or it's not allowing you to perform an action? From your mobile device, turn Bluetooth off and then on again. Wait for the app to establish its connection to the Portal Light.

Step 4: Configure WiFi custom network

During this step, you'll configure the Portal Light's WiFi custom network - which is the network it will connect to at its install location.

If pre-configured your Portal Lights with the custom network settings, you can skip this step. Pre-configuration is requested at the time an order is placed.

If pre-configured your Portal Lights with the custom network settings, you can skip this step. Pre-configuration is requested at the time an order is placed.

Sign in to Kio Cloud > select Device Management > select Gateways > locate the Portal Light and verify it's Online.

If you're configuring multiple Portal Lights and they have the same custom network, be sure to use the Bulk Edit feature.

From the list, select the ID of the Portal Light > from its WiFi network properties, enter the network settings > select Save Changes.

  • Network Authentication: Personal (WPA; TKIP & AES), Enterprise (WPA2; TKIP & AES), Open WiFi (WEP; Open & Shared)
  • Network Name: SSID; case sensitive
  • Network Password: passphrase (network password); case sensitive
  • Alias: for information purposes only

Next steps

When setup is complete, you can now configure its settings from Kio Cloud. The settings configured is dependent on the solution deployed at your organization. A common next step is to add the Portal Lights to your Kio Cloud Smart Location.
